Mitt’s Meet mistakes

It has turned out that Mitt Romney’s Meet the Press appearance appeared decent at the time, but mistakes seem to be coming out of the woodwork. Race 4 2008 has one write-up.

First, there was Romney’s lie about the NRA endorsement. He claimed that he had received it in 2002. He hadn’t. Just made it up.

Second, he claimed that "…every piece of legislation which came to my desk in the coming years as a Governor, I came down on the side of preserving the sanctity of life." Fred Thompson’s campaign sent out a press release basically blowing that up.

Third, Jen Rubin at the Spectator drills down and finds Romney’s statements on taxes totally lacking. Key quotes:

On the subject of fees and taxes a pre-The Note Rick Klein reported in 2003: "A survey of states grappling with spending crises has found that Massachusetts imposed more fee hikes than any other state in the nation this year - at least $500 million. … ‘These are just indiscriminate, broad-based fee increases because of a reluctance to raise taxes,’ said Michael J. Widmer, president of the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation. ‘It’s been disingenuous to say there’s no new taxes, in the sense that there’s very little connection to the fee increases and the cost of services that the fees are supposed to represent.’" Groups like Citizens for Limited Taxation at the time were similarly suspicion about the distinction.

And fourth, Romney "I was an independent in the time of Reagan/Bush" and "I voted for Paul Tsongas" said:

OK, Tim, let’s go back and let’s, let’s–I’m going to reject the premise, to begin with because, when I ran against Ted Kennedy, I realized the shot was a long shot, to beat Ted Kennedy in Massachusetts.  But I was tired of his liberal policies.  And as you’ll recall, I fought for the death penalty, I said secure the borders, I said at the same time we’re going to completely redo our welfare system and get rid of the old welfare system.  I ran as a Republican and a conservative.  And when I ran for governor in Massachusetts, you were there.  First question you asked me in the debate, "Tell me about the death penalty." I was for the death penalty.  I was for English immersion in our schools.  I said, I said…

Yeah. Whatever dude. Again, Jen Rubin whips out the quotes:

“I Am A Fiscal Conservative And A Social Moderate.” (2002)

“I Was An Independent During The Time Of Reagan-Bush.  I’m Not Trying To Return To Reagan-Bush.” (1994)

"I don’t know that the world is pining for a progressive-on-social-issues governor of Massachusetts." (2002)

Then there’s my personal favorite "my R doesn’t so much stand for Republican as Reform."

I just can’t wait for the video mashup of the 2007 statements against his actual record.

Romney lied about 2002 NRA endorsement

Mitt Romney didn’t tell the truth. Again.

In answer to questions about whether he would sign an assault weapons ban, Romney said: "Just as the president said, he would have, he would have signed that bill if it came to his desk, and so would have I. And, and, and yet I also was pleased to have the support of the NRA when I ran for governor. I sought it, I seek it now. I’d love to have their support."

Later in the interview, he added the following:

"I just talked about, about guns. I told you what my position was, and what I, what I did as governor; the fact that I received the endorsement of the NRA."

So? It just ain’t true, as his campaign even admits:

He was never endorsed by the NRA, and didn’t have their official support during his 2002 gubernatorial campaign. The NRA declined to endorse in that race, as was acknowledged by Romney’s spokesman this morning.

"The NRA did not endorse in the 2002 campaign," said spokesman Kevin Madden, when asked about Romney’s comments. "Mitt Romney as a candidate received a respectable B grade rating from the NRA, and when he was governor he had the support of the NRA and the Gun Owners Action League in relaxing some of the state’s burdensome licensing regulations."

Damn, that’s strong language from Mayor Giuliani. (H/T: Ryan Sager)

Quote of the Day

On the issue, Sharpton is wrong and Romney is right. But Sharpton is so much more funny:

"I intend to engage on this. He’ll find out rabbit hunting ain’t fun when the rabbit’s got the gun," Sharpton said.

Huckabee and Colbert on Romney

I think it is notable when one candidate attacks another by name. Especially when it is this scathing.

Guy in NRA hat speaks: Romney another Kerry

Last week, Mitt Romney shot himself in the foot by answering a question about hunting. The guy who asked the question was tracked down by a Boston TV station. Here’s what he had to say, and it is brutal:

Some quotes:

"Now I have some doubts."

"Flip-flop? Yeah, I see another John Kerry coming down the road."

"I think he may have shot himself in the foot."

Why the Democrats shouldn’t run Congress…

Sorry for being a little off-topic, but I thought this was classic. Don Wolfensberger, one of the great Congressional procedure wonks, described in Roll Call ($) the procedure that allowed the GOP to amend a the DC vote bill with a DC gun ban provision. The whole event is a brilliant lesson in the hypocrisy of the House Democratic leadership. This is a long post and a little esoteric. So, if you are interested in Congressional procedure and Democratic hypocrisy, read more after the jump.

Huckabee attacks Romney; praises Giuliani

On Face the Nation yesterday, Mike Huckabee attacked Mitt Romney over his hunting record. He said:

"I think it was a major mistake," said Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor. "It would be like me saying I’ve been a lifelong golfer because I played putt-putt when I was 9 years old and I rode in a golf cart a couple of times."

"I think American people are looking for authenticity," Huckabee added. "Match their record with their rhetoric."

On Sunday, Huckabee said Romney’s comments undermined his credibility as a candidate.

At the same time, Huckabee praised Rudy Giuliani’s honesty:

"Now, I disagree with him. I don’t think we ought to use federal tax dollars for abortion, and I wouldn’t if I were president," Huckabee said.

"But I thought it was at least a statement of extraordinary honesty and candor on the part of Giuliani that he would go into South Carolina, a very pro-life environment, and just say, look, this is who I am. I’m not going to change just to get your votes," he said.

Now I have suggested that Huckabee ought to get out, but this illustrates an interesting strategic calculation. Is Huckabee trying to damage Romney to help Giuliani? Is this a game of kiss-up for the VP spot or a cabinet post? Or is Huckabee just shooting from the hip? (consider his recent comment that candidate’s personal lives should be taken into account)

Was Romney quoting Monty Python?

Romney said:

I’ve been a hunter pretty much all my life. I’ve never really shot anything terribly big. I used to hunt rabbits.

Monty Python’s Mosquito Hunter said:

I’ve been a hunter all my life.

Watch the vid:

Note also from that AP story:

Romney added: "Shooting a rabbit with a single-shot .22 is pretty hard, and after watching me try for a couple of weeks, (my cousins) said, ‘We’ll slip you the semiautomatic. You’ll do better with that.’ And I sure did."

Lifetime hunter Mitt Romney never had license

Mitt Romney’s hunting problem continues.

Earlier this week, Mitt Romney said he had "been a hunter all his life." (see video here) But a reporter did some research, and Romney’s campaign admitted that Romney had only been hunting twice, once as a teenager and once for a fundraiser. Then Romney himself said that he was a "varmint hunter", not a "big game hunter."

Well, Romney’s foot is still firmly planted in his mouth. The AP’s Glen Johnson asked a simple question, "Did Mitt Romney ever have a hunting license." Romney hasn’t:

Officials in the four states where Mitt Romney has lived say the Republican presidential contender, who calls himself a lifelong hunter, never took out a license.

Romney tried to explain this away:

Romney says that’s because he has seldom hunted where he needed one.

Well, Glen Johnson did some research. And to hunt "varmints" in Michigan, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, Romney needed a license:

Officials from Michigan, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, where a license is necessary to hunt such small game, said they could not immediately locate any license for Romney. An official in Utah said a change in state law last year blocked public access to license records.

In Utah, licenses are only needed for some kinds of small game. Perhaps Romney was careful about only shooting those:

Jack rabbits can be hunted without a license and killed without limit, but cottontail rabbits and snowshoe hares require a license.

Recall that Romney was confused about whether he owned a gun or not:

So Romney went from having a gun, to not having a gun, to having two guns. Except they are his son’s guns. At (one of) their vacation homes in Utah. That’s "his" gun.

This is important because it goes to character. Romney struggles to tell the truth and keep his story straight about basic facts about his own life. He also struggles to keep his story straight on issues like abortion, gay-rights, taxes, guns, embryonic stem-cell research, Ronald Reagan, the Contract with America, immigration, and campaign finance reform.

It is clear what Romney is doing. He is just making it up as he goes along. He is making himself up as he goes along. Is that the kind of man you want running your country?
