Romney’s closing message in Michigan or a new campaign?

15 January, 2008 (08:59) | Michigan, economy | By: soren

Dean Barnett offers a scathing assessment of the Romney campaign today. I don’t want to focus on that here, instead his closing:
I hope Mr. Romney does well enough in Michigan today that he gets the opportunity to introduce the public to the real Mitt Romney. He is a wonderful and gifted guy. It would be [...]

McCain town hall in Reagan Democrat country

12 January, 2008 (13:38) | Michigan, economy | By: soren

(Cross-post from Redstate)
Macomb County, Michigan, is one of the homes of the Reagan Democrat. Today, I saw John McCain give a town hall in the closing stretch of the Michigan primary. I don’t have pictures because my video camera was stolen, but I have impressions.
Michigan is in an a single-state recession. Unemployment is [...]

McCain campaign claiming momentum and seeking more endorsements

11 January, 2008 (09:09) | Michigan | By: soren

The John McCain campaign is trying to score some endorsements out of the ranks of other campaigns. They are  looking for a press boost and more momentum to add to what they already have. Note that with Rudy Giuliani’s complete pull-out of MIchigan those activists, voters, and endorsers may help with that boost.

Dear McCain Supporter,
Over [...]

Steve Forbes, Rudy, Romney, and the economy

9 January, 2008 (14:47) | Michigan, economy | By: soren

(Cross-posted from Redstate)

Two days ago (technical problems delayed this) in Manchester, New Hampshire, I sat down with Steve Forbes, and we talked about his endorsement of Rudy Giuliani, and his thoughts on the economic records of the other candidates. As a supporter of Rudy Giuliani’s he has the most to say about what he likes [...]

Romney cites his education as authority

21 December, 2007 (09:30) | Michigan | By: soren

The whole Mitt Romney/Martin Luther King thing just gets weirder and weirder. He told the Detroit Free Press:
"You know, I’m an English literature major as well. When we say, ‘I saw the Patriots win the World Series, it doesn’t necessarily mean you were there — excuse me, the Super Bowl. I saw my dad [...]

Romney: “I saw my father march with MLK”

20 December, 2007 (18:24) | Michigan | By: soren

As you probably know by now, Mitt Romney said "I saw my father march with Martin Luther King." It seems that what Romney means by that isn’t what you and I mean. Let’s break the sentence down and see how Mitt Romney parses it:
I saw …

Romney explains what he means by "I saw":
“If you look [...]

Is Michigan Huckabee’s firewall?

10 December, 2007 (02:19) | Michigan | By: soren

According to RCP, Rasmussen has the first Michigan poll in about a month. Normally, I don’t write about all the polls coming out. But this is the only data we have since the Huckaboom. In this data, we have Mike Huckabee at 21, Mitt Romney at 20, and Rudy Giuliani at 19.
A Huckabee success [...]

CNBC/WSJ Debate

9 October, 2007 (16:42) | Michigan, economy | By: soren

They start with Fred Thompson.
Thompson: No reason to believe in a recession. He rattles off the numbers. He cuts to long-term spending, which is right up his ally. They follow up and ask about the polling and the angst.
They switch to Romney and ask about foreclosure. 1/100-some. Romney responds. "Inexcusable that Michigan is [...]

Politics of UAW strike

25 September, 2007 (10:41) | Michigan, economy | By: soren

Now there are plenty of interesting things to say about the economics of the UAW strike. But let’s talk politics.
What are the Dem candidates going to do? Does John Edwards run to join the picket lines? Does Hillary Clinton, confident in her primary victory, stay lukewarm? Or, sensing that she needs the votes of those [...]

States will get full delegates

28 August, 2007 (21:43) | Michigan | By: soren

Somehow, I am not all that impressed by the fight over the national parties stripping delegates from state parties who will have primaries prior to Feb. 5th.
Last week, the story was Florida and the Democrats. This week, it appears to be the Republicans and Florida, South Carolina, and New Hampshire.
How long will it take [...]
