While I’ve been busy planning to take over the world, some of my friends in the conservative blogosphere (Soren Dayton, Patrick Hynes, Matt Lewis and Patrick Ruffini) have engaged in a rather spirited debate about the state of our movement. I’m going to hold off writing anything at the moment (mostly because I’m exhausted after a long week), but I do want to say that I’m pleased to see conservative bloggers having this important conversation.  Posted at 12:27 AM in Conservatism         Save to Del.icio.us         Share on Facebook [...] […] I’ve stayed surprisingly silent the past few days about Peter Bienart’s most recent column, which insulted my employer and trashed the conservative movement. My friend Soren Dayton of Eye on 08 reacted earlier today to Peter Beinart’s Op-Ed in today’s Washington Post. I know from Soren’s post and from private conversations we’ve had that he and I have similar thoughts about the state of the movement. But whereas I take a somewhat grumpy, pessimistic view, Soren sees the low state of conservatism as an opportunity to sound the tocsin. He concludes his post thus: “It is time for a renewal. It is time to build something.” [...] […] I’m not the only conservative blogger writing about conservatism and the conservative movement today. Like how Brownback is the devil for reporting his flip-flops, but Romney can lie about Giuliani for months. He's sorry now, but only after he was called out in the last debate for his rank hypocrisy. Or how he can ridicule his opponent for governor in 2002 for flip-floping on abortion. And how he can accuse people of being "holier than thao" He can bash Hillarycare all day long and get standing ovations, but factcheck.org basically says his plan in MA was "virtually identical" He can bash McCain-Kennedy on immigration today when he was on their side just months ago... and the mitt bots rejoice. Romney is getting a free ride by just about every conservative pundit I can think of. If he thinks he's being victimized now, he has no business being in this race.
